At the Union County Humane Society, we spay/neuter, microchip, temperament test, and vet check 100%
of the animals that we adopt to the public and continue to work with our adopters following adoption.
Adoption fees are donations to help all of the animals in our care receive the love and attention they need before finding their own home.
If you’re lucky enough to adopt one of these animals, know that you’ve helped save the lives of more than one pet!
Our actual monetary investment in each animal is ALWAYS more than the adoption fee. Each
Adopted Animal:
- Has been examined by our veterinarian
- Has been spayed/neutered
- Is on heartworm preventative
- Is on flea preventative
- Has been treated for worms
- Has been vaccinated
- Has been microchipped
- That’s a value of over $700!
Adoptions can occur on the day you come in to meet your fur-ever friend.
All adoptions are subject to staff approval.
A Few Words About Adoption Fees
The Union County Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) private nonprofit organization funded largely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, and foundations, and supported by sponsorships, grants, bequests, investments, and proceeds from some service fees.
Adoption fees do not cover the expenses an animal may incur during their stay at our shelter. It costs an average of $30 per animal per day to cover food, shelter, and veterinary care. Some animals do not require much veterinary care while others may require substantial resources to help them find a new home.
Our goal is to help as many animals find new loving homes as quickly as possible. As such, we have variable adoption fees for our animals. The higher adoption fees help to cover our costs and allow us to not only continue our work but also place other pets at lower adoption fees, reducing their time in our shelter. Adoption fees vary based on a variety of factors such as age, temperament, breed, health, level of training, anticipated future medical costs, etc.
Example: We receive a puppy from an owner who recently purchased it from a pet store but realizes they cannot care for the puppy and surrenders her to us. This puppy is given a $400 adoption fee and is adopted within one day. That $400 helps to cover the expenses for another older dog who required ACL surgery and months in foster care and an older cat who stayed at the shelter for months before having its adoption fee waived.
We know our shelter animals are PRICELESS and we’re here to serve the community through all our programs and services. Thank you for choosing to adopt from UCHS.
