All About Us...

Each year the Union County Humane Society serves over 1,300 lost, stray or abandoned domestic animals from Union County, OH. Each year we are also successful in placing 85%-90% of the animals that we care for through a coordinated effort consisting of public outreach, foster families, rescue groups, and other dedicated animal lovers who assist us. The UCHS utilizes the ASPCA's Meet Your Match Canine-ality Assessment to help match the right family to the right dog, greatly reducing the number of animals that come back to us, and greatly increasing the experience our clients and furry guests.

Our Mission

Connecting people with animals while enriching lives.

Our Vision

A compassionate organization that places every adoptable animal in a forever home and effectively advocates for the humane treatment of animals. We coordinate programs and services for the people and animals of our community that increase public awareness and education. We are an organization committed to continuous improvement.

Our Values

Service Excellence

We believe that taking good care of people goes hand-in-hand with taking good care of animals. Great customer service, education and support help equip our community to properly care for animals. We strive to meet the needs of both people and animals.

Qualify Of Life For All

We aim to promote respect and compassion for people and animals alike. Our staff, volunteers, supporters, patrons and guests are all valued and respected.

Healthy And Positive Environment

Our center is NOT a prison for unwanted animals. It is a temporary home for animals in need.We treat our animals as guests and strive to provide a comfortable, safe and healthy living environment. We never use guilt to motivate people into action and we foster positive energy.

Individuality

We believe that every animal deserves to be considered as an individual. As such, a unique plan is established for each individual. We NEVER set a time limit on the length of stay for our guests. We keep all adoptable pets as long as possible to ensure each is given every opportunity to find a new and forever home.

Knowledge And Education

We believe that education is the key to enriching the lives of people and animals. We are dedicated to providing high quality education programs for the community, our staff and supporters, as well as our residents.

Proactive Population Control

We support the reduction of homeless animals through preventative measures for population control.

Setting us above the rest:

Top Dogs: Volunteers who have accumulated over 25 hours are eligible to become Top Dogs and learn more about animal behavior and positive reinforcement training as well as assist UCHS staff at adoption events offsite.

Heel-2-Heal: Shelter dogs trained by Central Ohio Youth Center juvenile residents and local trainer Kym Jarvis, CPDT. Dogs receive their Canine Good Citizen (CGC) certification and go on to work with a number of families.

Ruff Reading: Local school children read to shelter dogs at the library, or to the cats in our open cat room to increase literacy and confidence in reading outloud. Children record the hours they have read. At the end of the program the top readers are awarded prizes and everyone gets a pizza party.

Kitty Connection: Connecting seniors with animals has been proven to be therapeutic and be beneficial to their health. At UCHS, we allow seniors to foster an adult cat for a long-term basis at no cost. If the senior is ever unable to care for their cat, we will guarantee to take it back and find the cat a new home. For $10/year, UCHS will assist with transportation and basic health check-ups by our shelter veterinarian. To sign up for the kitty connection email Carol@uchspets.org
